Independent study into an existing music video director ( Post 21 )

We were set the task of researching into an existing music video director and producing a profile of them independently. We were given a choice of directors on which we could complete this task:
  • Spike Jonze
  • Hannah Lux- Davis
  • David Fincher
  • Warren Fu
  • Michel Gondry
  • David Wilson

After doing some research into each of these directors, I have decided to do my documentary on David Wilson as he seemed to be the most interesting and fun to research after an initial look. I like how he incorporates animation and am interested to see how he creates this when I research further into him and his style.

Here is a link to his website, which has all of his work and some information about him, listing the amount of awards he has been awarded.

This is the first video I came across about him and his career, and it depicts how he didn't even intend to be a music director, he just started making videos for fun during his degree. It was only when these started to recognised did this become an option for him. It also gave me a firm idea of David's style, he likes to use a mix of animation and physical performance in quirky ways that end up leading to interesting and enjoyable music videos as a result.

David Wilson is a London based Director who has made a name for himself; creating music videos for artists such as the Arctic Monkeys, David Guetta, Lady Gaga, Royal Blood and Tame Impala and has also received an impressive list of awards, including being crowned Best Director at the UK Music Video Awards and a Grammy nomination in 2015 for his video for ArcadeFire, 'We Exist'.

David studied illustration at the university of Brighton rather than film because he didn't think about being a music director as it didn't even seem a possible career when he was applying for university. As a replacement, he began to draw and then turned them into animations. He did this from his bedroom and it was before the days of Youtube so it wasn't as easy to project your films to the public, so he didn't really share his videos with anyone originally. Halfway through his university course Youtube was created and he paths animations online and soon he started to get some recognition for his talent, and thus his career as a music director began.

One of his first projects was a music video for Moray McLaren's song 'We Got Time' using physical effects involving spinning disks.

One of his noticeable traits in his videos are the seemingly easy transitions in and out of digital effects and real effects. There is a motivation behind keeping the old style within his videos
A key thing, noticeable in his videos are the seemingly easy transition in and out of digital and real effects. He says that he does this because 'when you look back in ten years, you can see how technology has developed and digital effects will have changed so much that they don't look real or convincing, whereas with physical effects, they will always look genuine.' Thus he by maintaining this style he is giving his videos an effect that will never age.
