Planning/ research : Examples of Ancillary Task 2
As with ancillary task 1, I am also researching into a variety of professional and student made versions of music posters, to help me with ancillary task 2.
Professional examples:
Greenday: 21st Century breakdown

Within this cover there is lots of information about the band. The band name is printed in large typography, giving the consumer immediate knowledge of who's product they are looking at. It lets you know in large writing when the album is being released, promoting other products for the same band, working effectively as an advertisement. Underneath this it informs us of one of the better known songs on the album, to act as an incentive for consumers to purchase the album as they already know they like a song included. The typography used has a certain type of character which suggests to the consumer of the style and image of the band, even though there is no actual photographs of the band members. The image used is the same as on the album cover, adding to the continuity of the advertising campaign. The image itself is representative of the album title; the brick wall and darkened colours add a sense of destruction to the image. Overall, I think it is quite a good album poster but I don't particularly like the typography, as although it has character I don't think it looks very professional.
Oasis : Don't Believe The Truth

This poster differs from the one above as it includes an image of the band giving them an identity with the product immediately. The image is the main premise of the poster and due to the bands fame would already attract a large consumer market as people are already interested with their music, therefore making it effective for advertising; however this may not work for smaller bands. The band name is also large at the top continuing to remind the consumer of who's product they are purchasing. Like the Greenday album it includes songs on the poster to inform the consumer of what they are purchasing and acting as an incentive for people who are already fans to purchase the album. It also uses superlatives such as 'Best Album 2005' which would attract new customers to be interested in this music. I like this poster as it is simple yet sells the band and the album effectively.

This poster is very simplistic as it just has a photograph of the artist in the colour orange. It is very minimal with the information it gives the consumer, the artist, album name, release date and some of the songs included. It is all in smaller font so not to distract from the image of the artists face, but to give the consumer the information of they desire it. I personally don't like the layout or image of this poster, I think it is overly simple and wouldn't really catch a consumers attention unless they were already aware of the artist. I don't particularly like the image, I don't think it does much to advertise the music, so I am not planning on including any aspects of this poster within my own coursework.
Student made Examples:
Tom Balderstone:
This cover has a vibrant background colour, contrasting the white of the typography and water, thus becoming very eyecatching. This also would suggest to the customer that the music of the band would also be fun, reflecting off the image. The title of the album is in large typography, however I perhaps would not have kept it in white as I think another colour would have stood out better against the background of the white water, as it blends in a little. I think that the poster is very simplistic but this is effective; however it gives the customer very limited information on the release of the album or how to purchase it, which could be seen as a disadvantage on an advertising front. Overall, I like this poster for its simplicity but I think it could sell the album a bit more than it does.
Harry Buxton :

This poster is much more detailed than the previous, giving the bands social media and the album release date in smaller writing, but still supplying the customer with that information. The main premise of the poster is some artwork, which from my audience research I know people seem to favour. It is very creative and interesting, yet not overly complicated so to overcrowd a consumer. It gives off a definite style of the artist and would act as an incentive for someone to buy the poster as it includes such beautiful artwork. I also like how only the heart is in colour, it makes it seem the centre of the poster which has some nice imagery. I personally like this poster a lot and might try to include some elements as inspiration for my own coursework as it looks very professional.
Meghan Kelly:

This poster is the only one to include ratings from other artists, which although can add some incentive to purchase the product from my research people generally do not think this adds anything to an album poster so I may avoid when constructing my own. However I like the theme of the poster, it ties into the music video and digipak with continuity. Also the typography also fits into the style of the poster and helps make all tie together nicely. The image is an ambiguous but eye catching, sparking enough interest to get a new customer to be interested in the band and their album. I like this poster as I think it is effective due to the editing of the photograph and how it all looks very tied together, therefore I may try to include something similar within my own coursework.
